Royals general manager speaks to doctoral students

Kansas City Royals General Manager Dayton Moore delivered a guest lecture last week to a group of Baker University doctoral students in Overland Park. Moore spoke to Baker’s 16th doctor of education cohort about the power of organizational culture and, specifically, how he built a small-market baseball club into the 2015 World Series champions. For Moore, leadership is about building a culture.

“If you’re only 99.9 percent committed, then you’re out,” Moore warned the class. He also implored the future Ed.D. candidates to never compromise on moral principles, welcome diverse opinions and ensure every member of the team is absolutely dedicated.

At the end of the hour long lecture, Moore took questions from the class. Doctoral students from the Wichita campus joined the event via live stream.

Jim Robins, associate professor, teaches Ethics of District Leadership and served as Moore’s host for the evening.

Baker University offers two doctoral degrees. The Ed.D. in Educational Leadership prepares educators for PK-12 district-level administrative positions. The Ed.D. in Leadership in Higher Education prepares graduates for leadership positions in post-secondary institutions.
